Vice President Joe Biden Endorses Jocelyn Benson for Michigan Secretary of State

Former Vice President Joe Biden today announced he has endorsed Jocelyn Benson to be Michigan’s next Secretary of State, calling her a “leader who will make Michigan proud.”  Biden said one of the best ways we can help save voting rights in the United States is by “electing strong Secretaries of State, the folks responsible for overseeing elections, all across the country.”

“We’re at a pivotal time in our nation when protecting the sacred right to vote and our elections is more important than ever,” Biden said.  “I am proud to endorse Jocelyn Benson for Michigan Secretary of State because she will make sure special interests don’t drown out the voices of working men and women by cleaning up the secret money flowing into our elections. Jocelyn is a leader who will make Michigan proud and that is why I am supporting her.”

The Biden endorsement is just the latest in a list of people and organizations endorsing Benson, including nearly 7,000 delegates who endorsed her at the Michigan Democratic Party’s spring convention.  Her official nomination will come August 25th when the party completes is slate for the November ballot.

Benson is running for office on a plan that includes a 30-Minute Guarantee for service, a ban on fee increases, voter protection and access, election security and transparency and ethics.

“I am honored to have Joe Biden on my side,” Benson said today.  “Like the vice president I, too, believe that our right to vote is being threatened and that is why my plan is focused on making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”

Jocelyn Benson has more than a decade of experience as a national leader in election law and administration.  She is the author of Secretaries of State: Guardians of the Democratic Process, the first major book on the role of the Secretary of State in enforcing election and campaign finance laws, and promoting fair, accessible and secure elections.

Benson has a proven track record of success in leading institutions, cutting costs and improving services. As the former dean of Wayne State University Law School she froze tuition, expanded access to scholarship funds for all students, and bolstered the school’s reputation and bar passage rates.

Benson is currently CEO and Executive Director of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), a national nonprofit.  She serves on several national boards including the advisory board of iCivics, a non-profit founded by retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and dedicated to engaging students in meaningful civic learning.
