Secretary of State Candidate Jocelyn Benson Responds to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Controversial Voter Purge Decision

DETROIT – Democratic candidate for Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson issued the following statement today in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s divided 5-4 decision allowing the State of Ohio’s and other state’s voter purges to continue:

“We need to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat and today’s decision by the US Supreme Court does neither.  Instead the Court undermines the integrity of our elections by saying it is ok to purge tens of thousands of eligible voters from the rolls without evidence that they moved or left the state.  It’s a decision that will have a particular impact on our military service members serving overseas, as Ohio resident and eligible voter Joe Helle could attest after he returned home from multiple deployments only to find he was purged from the rolls.  Today’s decision highlights why now more than ever we need Secretaries of State who will guard our democracy against any attempts to suppress or block any eligible citizen from casting their ballot.  As Michigan’s next Secretary of State I will make it my mission to make us a national leader in fair, modern, accessible and secure elections.”
