Jocelyn Benson, Democratic candidate for Michigan Secretary of State, today announced the support of current and former Secretaries of State from across the nation that are endorsing her election as Michigan Secretary of State in November.

“I am proud to have the support of such a distinguished group of men and women who know what it takes to be an effective Secretary of State, to work every day to protect voting rights and to secure our elections,” Benson said.  “On so many issues, from military voting to transparency and ethics in government, they are leaders and I am heartened they support me to join their ranks.”

Endorsing Benson are current Secretaries of State Alex Padilla of California, Maggie Toulouse Oliver of New Mexico, Steve Simon of Minnesota,Jim Condos of Vermont, Matthew Dunlap of Maine, and Alison Lundergan Grimes of Kentucky.  Also endorsing Benson are Oregon GovernorKate Brown, former Oregon Secretary of State, and former Secretaries of State Natalie Tennant of West VirginiaMark Ritchie of Minnesota, andJason Kander of Missouri

“Michigan and, indeed, the nation need a Secretary of State who will join the fight to protect the sacred right to vote and the security of our elections,” Padilla said.  “Free and fair elections and ensuring that every legitimate vote is counted are the cornerstones of our democracy. No one appreciates that more or is better prepared to wage that fight than Jocelyn Benson, which is why she is the best person to be Michigan’s next Secretary of State.”

Benson has called for sweeping changes that will ensure the security of Michigan’s elections in the face of domestic and foreign threats that could undermine the security of America’s democracy including:

Implementation of Risk-Limiting Post-Election Audits, which employs statistically-based audit techniques to provide statistical confidence that the election result is correct;

Improved Poll Worker Training, Recruitment, and Accountability by standardizing poll worker training to eliminate inconsistencies and ensure that workers are prepared to help conduct elections;

Convene an Election Security Commission of the nation’s top election security experts to advise Michigan on ways to make its elections more secure;

Tough, New Penalties for Election Equipment Tampering, including making it a felony to tamper with voting systems or devices, or equipment on which a vote is cast and counted; and

Strengthening the Accuracy of the Qualified Voter File by joining the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), a self-governing non-profit dedicated to improving the accuracy of voter files.

In addition to securing Michigan’s elections, Benson plan includes a 30-Minute Guarantee for services, a ban on fee increases that have hit Michigan families hard in recent years, protecting voting rights and expanding ethics and transparency in state government.
